In all quiet on the western Front paul is emotionally hurt from the war. Paul sees one of the other men at the front die, Kat. Kat wasnt like all the others, he had treated paul like a son. "...Kat falls. we two are alone,. i bind up his wound." paul has to help kat and while paul is carring him back to base kat gets hit in the head by a shell fragment and bleeds to death. When paul gets home, he shows how emotionally hurt he was. After paul walks up his stairs he hears his sister say," 'Mother, Mother, Paul is here'. i can go no further- mother, mother, paul is here". War wounds everyone who goes in emotionally as shown with paul.
